– Hardy, Azore trade punches ahead of their feature clash
Six of the eight fighters for the 20th edition of the Friday Night Fights slated for January 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, signed their contracts on Tuesday, thereby confirming their participation on the card.
On hand to witness the signing were president of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool, and GBBC’s executive, Howard Cox.
Before the actual signing, the boardroom was transferred into an indoor boxing ring as Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy and Iwan Azore were engaged in a heated argument, which subsequently led to an exchange of punches.
Both fighters received blows to their faces and abdomen, but a punch over Azore’s left eye burst his skin. The melee was eventually stopped by Abdool and others as blood started to pour from Azore’s wound. The two fighters, who will meet over 12 rounds for the WBC CABOFE Welterweight title, were kept apart from each other for the rest of the event.
The winner and eventual title holder will be rewarded with Gy $ 250,000.
The other fights on the night will see Mitchell Rogers and Anthony Augustin in a four- round heavyweight clash; Jermin King and Cecil Smith in a four-round welterweight bout; and Edmond De Clou and James Walcott in a catchweight contest.
De Clou and Walcott did not turn up to yesterday’s contract signing, but will do so at a later date.
In addressing the boxers, Abdool said the WBC has approved the Friday Night Fights. He also explained that the WBC has 10 confederations, some of which are Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia, Asia and CABOFE (Caribbean Boxing Federation).
He stated that these confederations have established championships in eight weight categories: Heavyweight, Middleweight, Super Lightweight, Lightweight, Featherweight, Bantamweight, and Flyweight.
All of the fighters expressed confidence of winning their respective bouts.
